first of all, there must be something in the air, word is getting out – from xmas to now the membership for the Out Astoria facebook group has jumped up by 100 – we’re now at 362 active members and we keep getting another one or two every day! this is going to make the next mixer a fantastic one…but more about that later.
second, just in case there’s any confusion about these emails i send out – if you lose something or can’t remember when/where something is – every email i send out is also posted as a blog entry at our website, so just point your browser to:
and you’ll see what’s coming up.
we’ve also created an actual Out Astoria profile on facebook too (at first we just did it to be cute, but it also proved to be the best way to combine our gmail address book for out astoria with our address book on facebook – so if anyone got a duplicate invitation from our new profile on there I’ll apologize now!) we just didn’t want to miss anyone who’s come out to our events in the past – especially now as we’re migrating away from evite sites like evite.com and socializr.com (they’re more of a hindrance than a help).
TONIGHT – JAN 14 – OUT ASTORIA DINNER AT VIVA EL MARIACHI – 7PM TO 9PM
Viva El Mariachi – 33-11 Broadway, Astoria, NY – 718-545-4039
yeah they don’t actually have a website but just about anyone who’s lived in Astoria for more than a few years knows about this place, has eaten there, and gone back for more. If you’ve seen the Facebook evite for this dinner already you’ll know about that foodie quote i found from someone who described the inexpensive food at Viva El Mariachi as:
“Like porn you can eat.”
just take a look at the extensive $2 taco menu – a few of them – a couple of modelo’s and you won’t have even gone over $20 – this is the kind of establishment i LIVE for!
We’re already at about 25 people with a rather large number of “maybes” too – we said we had to cap the attendees to 30 but we can probably squeeze in 35 if we have to – but if you’re still a maybe on the facebook evite you should figure out if you want to change your answer to a yes or no between now and 5pm just so we can at least warn the proprietors about the number of people who’ll be sitting together(ish)!
FRI – JAN 23 – OUT ASTORIA MIXER AT LAVISH LOUNGE – 7PM to 10PM (and later)
Lavish Lounge – 34-01 36 Avenue, Astoria, NY – 718-361-0022
After the fabulous first mixer we had at Lavish back in November and hearing all the crazy exploits you’ve all been having there since that mixer – the reports i got after the holiday party at bar 36 were nothing short of scandalous So now with them offering 2-4-1 drinks from opening to midnight every day – what i would call a recession buster (at least on a friday night) – if you aren’t already having a good time – you can INDUCE one! 😉
with the membership numbers going up more every day – we’ve already got damn near 100 people attending with another 100 people on the maybe side of attending (but you know how these mixers are – even if half of the maybes show up – this will be a great crowd…especially for January!
SAT – JAN 24 – QLGP’S WINTER PRIDE DINNER/DANCE AT ASTORIA WORLD MANOR – 7PM TO 12AM – $80 PRESALE/$85 AT DOOR
Astoria World Manor – 25-22 Astoria Blvd., Astoria, NY
Out Astoria will be hosting a table at this event honoring Rosie Mendez, Phyllis Steinberg, with a special thank you to the Queens Tribune for that fantastic Queens Gay Pride edition they do annually! If you haven’t been to one of these events before they’re a lot of fun – the appetizers alone are worth the price of admission (not to mention the open bar – and we’re not talking brand X booze, this is top shelf stuff!)
If you’re interested in attending and being seated at the Out Astoria table fill out the attached ticket order form and mail it in with your payment ASAP. Then contact the Out Astoria table captains: Mike Mallon at email@example.com and/or Rob Zukowski at firstname.lastname@example.org – and they’ll confirm your request to be seated with the rest of your local gays and lesbians! At the rate we’re going we may need more than one table!
SUN – MAR 1 – ST PATRICK’S DAY FOR ALL! – 1:30 PM – FREE
Out Astoria will have a group marching in this queens parade – if you’re irish, if you’re interested, if you’re just gay and like a good parade – feel free to join us! With this being the 10th anniversary of the St. Pats for All parade – we’re expecting record turnout!
The St. Pat’s for All Parade & Fair celebrates the diversity of the Irish and Irish American communities of New York. First held in 2000, St. Pat’s for All cherishes and celebrates an inclusive St. Patrick’s season. Ours is the first in the 260 years + of Irish parades in New York City to be open and welcoming to all who wish share the spirit of the day. We err on the side of hospitality. Our theme “cherishing all the children of the nation equally” is taken from the 1916 Easter Proclamation of the Irish Republic. It is a vision drawn from our past and a guide for our present & future.
On March 1st, 2009 for the tenth year, children & youth and the call of the bagpipes will lead the 10th annual St. Patrick’s Parade & Irish Fair in Sunnyside/Woodside. We have received commitments from many public officials, community groups, unions, pipers, dancers and puppeteers, religious communities, youth groups, seniors, gay and straight, all looking forward to celebrating our wonderful diversity. Visitors from Ireland will join us along with many contingents. We will again proudly showcase other contingents representing the great people of the caribbean, latino, Native American, and Korean communities.
Remember – we’re on Facebook now and if you’re not already friends with the Out Astoria profile you should friend us!
And once you’re friends with us, if you’re not already a member of the Out Astoria facebook group you should join that too!
(we seem to have gotten 3 more members in the time it took me to write this email to you all!)
And of course, don’t forget – we’re also on Why Leave Astoria?! – I went to a roundtable discussion they were having and these people are a hoot – even if you’re not gay you can get a lot from poking around their site – there’s tons of stuff going on locally that even my jaded ass didn’t know about!
for example, they have a group on there called “wine is for lovers” and they get a group together to go to Winegasm a few times a month to do what they call “wine class” – this Sunday, Jan 18 for $15 you can sample a few of Winegasm’s faves as they discuss the particular characteristics of each wine:
And that’s about all I’ve got for you this week kids…if i don’t see you tonight at Viva El Mariachi, I’ll see you at the sure to be packed mixer on Jan 23!
