Out Astoria in December!

Hey there everyone!

Happy *whateveritisyoucelebrate* Season!

First,  just a quick note to remind all of our Sponsor Members that the nominations for our 2013 Steering Committee Election are now open.  All active Out Astoria Sponsor Members are eligible to run for the five (5) open seats on the committee.  Simply email elections@outastoria.com to nominate yourself or another member (or if you have any questions at all about the process or requirements).  You can also find more information about the elections here.  We’ll be accepting nominees through 5:00 PM on January 3rd.  Only active Out Astoria Sponsor Members will be allowed to vote in the election.

Next, we have a few more events happening before we close the books on 2012:

FRI – DEC 7– OUT ASTORIA HOLIDAY PARTY 2012 – 8PM – FREE

Time Café –44-18 Broadway, Astoria, NY  11103

Our annual holiday party/mixer…come make the yuletide gay!  A time to celebrate the year that was and the holiday season with your favorite neighborhood Gaystorians.

We’ll be at Time Café with the following drink specials:

8PM-9:30PM – 2 for 1 drinks (no top shelf)

For the rest of the night: $4 shots

All are welcome!  If you have a few friends that have never come out to one of our mixers before, this is one to take them to – there’s always a big turnout for the last mixer of the year!

Also coming up this month:

FRI-DEC 21 – TOYS FOR THE ALI FORNEY CENTER ASTORIA – 8PM

Veronica’sBar – 34-04 36th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11106

Okay so it’s not really “toys” we’re looking for – we’ll actually be collecting item donations for the Ali Forney Emergency Shelter in Astoria.  We’re asking everyone to bring an item or two from the list of requested items from the shelter.  You can find that list here.  It’s the usual list of requests – Personal Grooming items, Pantry (dry/canned goods), Clothing (new/gently used – see list for specifics), and Household items that the shelter can always use.

Veronica’s Bar is giving us the usual cheap drink specials to help get you all out and in the mood for giving!  $4 well vodka drinks and the notorious $4 PBR with a shot of your choice!

If you don’t have time to go shopping before the event, we will also be taking cash/CC/Check donations at the door too –checks should be made out to Out Astoria, Inc.

Now a few other upcoming things of note:

The Out Astoria Running group meets every Sunday at 11:00 AM at the water fountain at the Astoria Park track – you can check their status on their Facebook Group here.

Out Astoria is being honored at the Queens Lesbian & Gay Pride Committee 2013 Winter Pride Dinner Dance on Saturday, January 26 from 7:00 PM to Midnight – Tickets are $85 and include hors d’oeuvres, dinner and open bar!  Out Astoria is hosting a table there – so if you’d like to sit with us, contact me directly.  Half our table is already booked!  Also – if you are interested in placing an ad in the Winter Pride Journal you can email me and I’ll send you the rates/form.

The Out Astoria Book Club will meet again on Tuesday, January 29 at 7:30 PM and we’ll be discussing David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas – perhaps after the discussion over wine and cheese we’ll arrange a screening of the film adaptation (if it’s out on DVD by then).  The location of the Out Astoria Book Club is secret and only open to Sponsor/Affiliate Out Astoria Members.  You can sign up here or email Jason Olsen if you have a question about your membership status.

See you all Friday night!

Out Astoria October Happenings!

It’s another full month for Out Astoria in October – so lets get right down to it, shall we?

It’s been a while since our last visit to Astoria’s one and only MexiQ!

MexiQ takes the immense popularity of barbecue joints in New York combined with New Yorkers’ intense love of Mexican cuisine, and features barbecue favorites with a Mexican accent.  That’s only the kitchen part; the draught part is as equally intense:  48 taps line the back bar, each one holding an artisanal style beer that has been chosen specifically and constantly rotated to match the food, the ever diverse seasons, and of course their neighbors taste buds.

Come join Out Astoria for our October Dinner – if beer isn’t your thing, you can always try one of their perfectly made margaritas (or anything else from their fully stocked bar).

We’re mixing it up again at MiX Astoria this October for a little pre-Halloween fun with your friends and gaybors!  As usual, the 8-9 open well bar is only $5 for members and $10 for non-members.

Join us for some autumnal antics with Out Astorian, Scott Emrich working the music for us this evening!  With an open bar with your local gays and a full evening of shenanigans, you’ll have plenty to talk about over brunch the next day!

If you’re not a member yet, why not join now?

TUES – OCT 25 – OUT ASTORIA OCTOBER BOOK CLUB MEETING – 7:30PM

Come join us for the October Non-Fiction Edition of the Out Astoria Book Club where we’ll discuss Mark Kurlansky‘s chatty, free-wheeling history of New York City told from the humble perspective of the once copious, eagerly consumed, now decimated eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginicas).

The Big Oyster:  History on the Half Shell digresses all over the place and sparkles!

It’s available in paperback, kindle, and there’s even an audio edition if you want to go that route.

If you’re on Good Reads too, feel free to join up with our group on there - you’ll always know which book we’re discussing next!

The location for the meeting is not listed here b/c only dues-paying Out Astoria Members are allowed to participate in this activity.  If you’re not already a member, why not become one now?

You’ll also be able to get to vote/run in the Out Astoria Elections for the Steering Committee positions that will be open at the end of this calendar year!  If you have any questions about that feel free to email the OA Elections Committee here.

Come out in full Halloween regalia for a fun night of freakish fundraising!  A $20 cover gets each attendee a raffle ticket and access to a two hour open bar with all proceeds going to The Trevor Project!

The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide intervention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.

Come hang out, dance the night away, enjoy a few cocktails, some candy…Stick around for chances to win Katy Perry tickets, an iPad, iPod and much much more all in support of an amazing cause!

and lest we forget…SAVE THE DATE:

FRI – DEC 16 – OUT ASTORIA’S ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY – 8PM – more details to follow so keep an eye out for it!

See you at dinner!

Out Astoria September Events

Now that the hurricane is over and we’re all starting to get back to the normal swing of things, we can give you the run-down of Out Astoria September Events!

TONIGHT – SEPT 8 – OA DINNER AT SWEET AFTON – 7PM

30-09 34 Street, Astoria, NY - 718-777-2570

Join us tonight for a fantastic dinner at Sweet Afton!  We’ll be enjoying great company in the picturesque back patio (but in case of any rogue thunderstorms tonight, we’ll take refuge in the spacious interior).

Sweet Afton is mostly known for being the happy hour location of many – and all their fantastic reviews in various citywide mags, papers, and blogs have helped establish it as such – but most people don’t even know about their famous mac & cheese, or their Sweet Afton Burger, not to mention the fantastic fried pickles beloved by many of their regular patrons!  Their menu is modestly priced and we’re sure you’ll find something for your taste, but please make sure you accurately RSVP so we can tell the manager how many seats we’ll need tonight!

FRI – SEPT 16 – OA MIXER AT MIX LOUNGE – 8PM – $5/10

40-17 30 Avenue, Astoria, NY - 347-642-4840

As we bid summer 2011 a fond adieu, you can come raise a class with the rest of your Queerstorians at our September Mixer at Mix Lounge!  It’ll be a night of new friends and not-so-new friends.  We’re offering an open well bar from 8-9pm with a $5 for OA Sponsor Members and $10 for non-members.  Come for the open bar, stay for the late shenanigans that always play out later on!

TUES – SEPT 27 – OA BOOK CLUB MEETING – 7:30PM – FREE FOR OA MEMBERS

Email us here about the Event.  Email us here with questions about OA Membership.

This month the Out Astoria Book Club will be meeting to discuss E. M. Forster’s A Room with a View.  We’ve decided to go a more classical route this month and there’s also the added benefit of this book being free for most (if not all) e-readers (as well as being easily found at any used book store).  You might even find a copy at Seaborne’s Book Store on Broadway in Astoria if you happen to be walking by!  So come to the meeting and bring some wine/beer and/or maybe a snack to share with the group and talk about Forster’s loving tribute to a British society we don’t much see anymore…propriety notwithstanding.  For those of you already participating – we wanted to let you know we’ve set up our Out Astoria Group Page at GoodReads.com - so make sure you sign up and join the group and keep up with everything everyone is saying about the next book we’ll be reading!

The location for the meeting is not listed here b/c only dues-paying Out Astoria Sponsor Members are allowed to participate in this activity.  If you’re not already a member, why not become one now?

You’ll also be able to get to vote/run in the Out Astoria Elections for the Steering Committee positions that will be open at the end of this calendar year!  If you have any questions about that feel free to email the OA Elections Committee here.

See you at dinner!

Let’s have some fun before the summer’s done!

It’s been a lazy August for us but we’re going to pack in as much as we can before Labor Day tells us that the summer is officially over – a mixer, a book club, a movie night, a field day and a writing group…maybe even a few other items to round out the end of your summer daze!

FRIDAY – AUGUST 19 – OA AUGUST MIXER AT HELL GATE SOCIAL – 8-11PM – FREE

12-21 Astoria Boulevard, Astoria, NY  11102 - 718-204-8313

Let’s spend an evening in Hell!  Or rather, the Hell Gate Social‘s decadent lounge.  If you’ve been there, you’re wondering why you haven’t been back.  And if you’ve never been, you’ll wonder where this place has been hiding!  Out Astoria Members and Non-Members alike are invited to this no-cover mixer.  While there will not be an open bar for this mixer, Hell Gate Social’s manager has given us a 2-for-1 extended happy hour from 8pm until 10pm! That includes top-shelf liquor and the bar’s fantastic list of signature cocktails!

Just make sure you know where Hell Gate Social’s door is!  It’s easy to walk right by this hidden gem!  But you can’t go wrong if you know it’s right next door to The Astor Bake Shop where we had our June OA dinner!

TUESDAY – AUGUST 23 – OA AUGUST BOOK CLUB MEETING – 7:30PM – OA MEMBERS ONLY

Email us here about the Event.  Email us here with questions about Membership.

This month the Out Astoria Book Club will be meeting to discuss Bill Clegg’s Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man:  A Memoir.  Bring some wine/beer and/or maybe a snack to share with the group and revel in the fact that Bill Clegg’s life was not your own!  For those of you already participating – we wanted to let you know we’ve set up our Out Astoria Group Page at GoodReads.com - so make sure you sign up and join the group and keep up with everything everyone is saying about the next book we’ll be reading.

The location for the meeting is not listed here b/c only dues-paying Out Astoria Members are allowed to participate in this activity.  If you’re not already a member, why not become one now?

You’ll also be able to participate in the Out Astoria Writing Group (see below) and get to vote/run in on the Out Astoria Elections for the Steering Committee positions that will be open at the end of this calendar year!  If you have any questions about that feel free to email the OA Elections Committee here.

WEDNESDAY – AUGUST 24 – OA MOVIE NIGHT AT SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK – FREE

32-05 Vernon Boulevard, Long Island City, NY - 718-956-1819

Socrates Sculpture Park’s Outdoor Cinema is a tradition of summer in the neighborhood…and this year is no different!

Come out and sample regional cuisine from a neighborhood restaurant, or bring your own food & drink and picnic on the grass as the sun sets over the city! Enjoy performances by local musicians and dancers and, as the sky darkens, see exceptional international films on a large-format screen–all set against the spectacular backdrop of the Manhattan skyline.

Join your Out Astoria friends and gay-bors on the grass of the park for this week’s screening of silent films with live music provided by Backyard Band/With! Pre-screening performances begin at 7PM – Film begins at sunset – and of course it’s FREE to all!

Backyard Band/with (www.backyardbandwith.com) is a simple recipe: silent films, live music and homemade pies (yes, you can have all three at the same time)! Enjoy a themed evening of unique silent films and imagery set to original, live scores by local musicians. The pie portion of the evening depends on you: it’s a potluck! Share your favorite recipes and discover new taste sensations. Film + music + pie = a truly social media!

We will, of course, let you all know where in the park the Out Astoria Group will be setting up their blankets for the screening (prior to the evening event). We’ll also keep a close eye on the weather forecasts and give everyone plenty of notice should the rain force us to cancel/change the event.  Just make sure you RSVP and check the Facebook Event Page prior to leaving the house – that’ll let you know where we are and if we need to cancel because of bad weather.

SUNDAY – AUGUST 28 – OA FIELD DAY IN ASTORIA PARK – FREE
Astoria Park, Astoria, NY

Join us for some afternoon sun in the park!  Remember how last winter you lamented not spending enough time in the sun while the weather was nice?  Well Out Astoria is providing you with a preemptive solution!

Bring:

A blanket

A bottle of wine

Your dog

A frisbee

Some Cheeze-Its

or just yourself…

Do it in the name of Vitamin D.  Or good people.  Or exercise.  Who cares?  Just do it!

Details on the exact location in the park will come soon – keep an eye on the Facebook Event Page.

TUESDAY – AUGUST 30 – OA WRITING GROUP MEETING – 8PM – OA MEMBERS ONLY

Email us here about the Event.  Email us here with questions about Membership.

If you are an Out Astoria Member and have been looking to get feedback on your poetry, novel, play or screenplay – why not consider joining the Out Astoria Writing Group?

The location for the meeting is not listed here b/c only dues-paying Out Astoria Members are allowed to participate in this activity.  If you’re not already a member, why not become one now?

You’ll also be able to participate in the Out Astoria Writing Group (see below) and get to vote/run in on the Out Astoria Elections for the Steering Committee positions that will be open at the end of this calendar year!  If you have any questions about that feel free to email the OA Elections Committee here.

And while we’ll be getting back into the swing of OA Dinners come this September, all you Out Astorians might like to know two of the places we love are running deals this week - MexiQ is running a two appetizer and a flight of four beer samples for two people for $16 via livingsocial.com this week, and the aforementioned Hell Gate Social is putting up one of the last of their $15 all you can eat BBQ Sundays 3-9PM (come for the food, stick around for the movie that starts in the backyard at sunset – this weekend it’s Jurassic Park)!  It’s one of the best outdoor movie spaces in Astoria (with a bar attached)!

Well that’s all for now!  As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly or the general information email if you’re not sure who to contact.

See you soon!
