A Few Local November Happenings!

Some of you have already seen the letter from our co-founders we sent out yesterday – but if you haven’t already, take a moment to read about how far we’ve come in just a few short years (not to mention our snazzy new website set up for us by Marc Stutzel).  It’s also the first part of or sponsor membership drive for the end of 2010 going into 2011 with the election of a new steering committee to head up our lovely little 501(c)3 in the next few years!  If you’ve been looking for a way to get more involved with Out Astoria, this is the official opportunity!

St. Joan at The Secret Theatre in Long Island City – OA Discount for remaining performances!

4402 23 Street, Long Island City, NY  11101 – 718-392-0722

This is, of course, the George Bernard Shaw play about the most notable warrior saint in the Christian calendar!  Given his spectacular reputation as a freethinker and assassin of sacred cows, many feared that Shaw would satirize Joan or portray her as a fraud.  Instead, without romanticizing her as a victim or tragic heroine, he paints her as a human being of unparalleled vision, courage, confidence, and imagination.  Rarely produced, due to the large number of male principal roles and complexity of the female lead, this Queens Players production will feature a full cast of 24!

The powers that be at the Secret Theatre have again given Out Astoria a bit of a discount for the remaining performances – November 5-13 – just head to the on-line box office and pick the performance you want and just enter the promotional code of “outastoria” and you can get $15 tickets!

MilkMilkLemonade at The Astoria Performing Arts Center – only 7 performances left!

30-44 Crescent Street, Astoria, NY (inside the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church Auditorium) – 718-706-5750

Sorry to say that the opening week discount they offered Out Astoria has expired, but if you haven’t managed to get in to see this show yet, you’re missing out on one of the best shows APAC has brought to our neighborhood!  There are still tickets left to the final 7 performances!  Just take a look at what Time Out New York thought!

Emory is an effeminate 11-year-old boy who lives on a farm with his chain smoking Nanna and his only friend, a depressed chicken about to be processed.  Nanna wishes Emory would get his head out of the clouds, stop choreographing ribbon stick dance numbers, and be more like Elliot, the bow down the road with a penchant for burning things.  But Emory and Elliot have a relationship – just not one Nanna would expect or approve of.  With absurd, poignant dialog, and brutal characterizations, MilkMilkLemonade is a bitterly funny exploration of gender, sexuality, life, death, and the human body.

8 – The Mormon Proposition Screening at The Long Island City Library – Sat. Nov. 6 – 3-6pm – FREE

37-44 21 Street, Long Island City, NY – 718-752-3700

QLGPC (Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee) arranged this free public screening of The Mormon Porposition:  Equality for Some at the Long Island City Public Library this Saturday afternoon!

The film exposes the Mormon Church’s historic involvement in the promotion and passage of California’s Proposition 8 and the religion’s secretive, decades-long campaign against gay rights.  The film takes place in California and Utah as Mormons, following their prophet’s call to action, wage spiritual warfare with money and misinformation against gay citizens, doing everything they can to deny them of marriage and the rights that come with it.

If you can’t make the screening this Saturday, QLGPC is hosting another screening in Jackson Heights 0n Saturday, November 20 from 3-6pm.
