Happy Generic Late December Greetings!

Just a quick reminder that the Out Astoria Steering Committee Nominations are open and you have until January 3 to get your name on the ballot!  Also, remember that only currently active SponsorMembers are eligible to nominate/vote in the coming election.

If you have any questions about your membership status, just drop an email to our Directorof Membership, Jason Olsen.

And of course this Friday we have…

OutAstoria’s AFC Astoria Shelter Fundraiser and Supply Drive!  (Also known as our Toys for AFC Mixer &Fundraiser!)

FacebookEvite is here.

MeetupEvite is here.

So obviously if you’ve got extra items that the Astoria shelter can use, by all means bring them along to donate – but if you’ve already given all your extras to Hurricane Sandy people in need, we’re also taking cash/check/credit card/PayPal donations.

We’ve set a fundraising goal of raising enough cash to help the shelter purchase a new stove for their kitchen – and that’s one of the more important items in these shelters (it’s right up there with the refrigerator and washing machine).  If everyone who comes to the event gives only $10 we’ll reach our goal in no time!  Please know that every dollar raised will help to maintain this shelter and no donation is too small!

However, if you’re leaving early for the holidays with your family or have to catch an early flight to whatever warm destination you’re spending New Year’s Eve in – you can donate on line via the Out Astoria website and our PayPal link.  Just make sure you note that the donation is “AFC” or “Ali Forney Center” so we know it’s not just someone paying their membership dues for the coming year!

As usual, Veronica’s Bar will be giving us the usual cheap drink specials to help get you all out (and in the mood for giving) – $4 well vodka drinks and the notorious $4 PBR with a shot of your choice!  And yes, Monica will be on hand to serve it all up for us!  Out Astoria will also be providing pizza for attendees (b/c what goes better with PBR?).

We hope you can all make it out this Friday night!

Also, don’t forget the upcoming Winter Pride Dinner/Dance on January 26 – Out Astoria is one of the honorees this year and we’re sponsoring a table – we’re also a featured table captain and have access to the cheapest tickets to the event!  So if you’re keen to sit at our table, just shoot me an email.  If you would like to buy an ad space in the event’s journal you can do so with the instructions on the attached rate sheets.  We’re lucky enough to be honored alongside the newly-elected Grace Meng and Dr. Marjorie Hill of GMHC!

Also, the Out Astoria Running Group will be on hiatus until after the holidays – keep on eye on their group page for updates on the first run of 2013.

And finally – we’ll be partnering with Queer in Queens this Thursday evening for a simple happy hour at the newly opened indoor beer garden StrandSmokehouse!  We’ll meet up and unwind after work with a few beers that are on average 14 proof!  RSVP for the event here.

That’s all for now, see you all Friday night at Veronica’s!

For the last three years Sissy McGinty’s has thrown a Toys for Tots Party and each year it gets better and better. This year Out Astoria is teaming up with Sissy McGinty’s what we believe will make for a magical evening!

When you bring a toy (unwrapped, please!) to help a less fortunate child celebrate the holiday season you will receive entry to an amazing buffet as well as a raffle ticket. When you give back, we give back!

DJ Stephen Charles will be spinning your favorite mix of today’s hits and old school jams. Drink specials all night long, an appearance from the United States Marine Corps, fantastic raffle prizes, photo booths and Hot Santa’s Helpers passing out shot specials and selling raffle tickets!

Of course this weekend’s festivities is just to whet your appetite for the party most of you have been waiting for the last twelve months!

FRI – DEC 17 – Out Astoria’s Holiday Party at Mix Lounge – 8PM to 11PM – $10/$15

40-17 30 Avenue, Astoria, NY – 347-470-4061

During this, the season of traditions, we feel it’s time to keep one of our own. The snow is coming and the nights are getting longer – but let’s make the most of our holiday spirit at our favorite local lounge. Each year, we at Out Astoria try to bring all of our friends and gay-bors together at our own little year-end holiday gathering…and our little gathering manages to get a little bit bigger each year!

So, to celebrate the holidays appropriately we’ve set up a dandy little party pre-fix for our guests! With $10 for sponsor members/$15 for non-sponsor members, you get access to our 2-hour (8-10pm) open well bar/beer and passed hors d’oeuvres created on site by Zuzie herself (just for our special gathering)! Of course, even if you’re running late from work that evening, make sure you swing by, there’s always a fun contingent of our people still celebrating until late!

For those who have already registered for an Out Astoria Sponsor Membership – we will have the membership list at the door.  Or take a moment to register your membership now at our website.

You can pay the $10 yearly dues via PayPal, or in person at the party when you collect your membership card!  We’ll also be accepting membership registrations at this event, just look for the guy with the paper registrations!

Also, as we did at our June Out Astoria mixer and fundraiser for the Ali Forney Center in Astoria, we’ll have a donation box at the front door of the holiday party for any OA member who’d like to get into the holiday spirit by bringing donations for the residents of the Ali Forney Center’s emergency shelter in Astoria for homeless LGBT youth. We’re looking to collect personal items such as shampoo, deodorant, soap/bodywash, or new socks and underwear (in their original package); pantry items in boxes, bags, or cans such as pasta and pasta sauce, mac and cheese, rice, soup, canned veggies and beans, or condiments such as ketchup, salt, hot sauce, or barbecue sauce; and general-use items such as paper towels, napkins, and heavy-duty paper plates.

If you are interested in donating gift cards for Ali Forney Center clients, visit:

http://www.aliforneycenter.org/help.html

If you’d like to make a donation of used (but still in good condition) pillows, sheets, blankets, coats, hats, gloves, or other larger items, e-mail our Vice President and put “shelter donation” in subject line; we’ll try to arrange a pick-up.

If we don’t see you this weekend at Toys for Tots, we’ll see you on the 17th!
