August Prix Fixe Dinner and Member’s Event

Hi all,

We’re just a few days from the August Dinner and our 2nd Members Prix Fixe Dinner at everyone’s new favorite restaurant The Shady Lady this Wednesday at 7PM!

We’ve got a table reserved for 10 attendees and there are still a few spots left but in case we have an 11th or 12th we’ll find a way to squeeze you all in!

As I’m sure you all know this dinner is a prix-fixe with a set price of $30 that includes one signature cocktail, one appetizer, one entree (yes, there are vegetarian options), and of course a dessert – it also includes tax and tip!  (And of course we know many of our members used to/still do wait tables – so if you want to leave a few extra dollars for your server, nobody is going to say you can’t!)

Also, because we’re limited with space for this event – we ask that everyone RSVP here and pre-pay via paypal – this way we can let the folks at Shady Lady the precise number of attendees they need to prep for and we can settle the bill with them easily.

1. Go to
2. Click on the Donate button on the right side of the page
3. Make a $30 donation
4. Click on “add special instructions to seller”
5. Write in “SHADY LADY (and your name)”
6. Send payment
7. Print receipt
8. Show up for event!

It’s that simple!

Here’s the menu choices (as if you need more enticing):

And also just a reminder for our First Annual Member’s Party on August 24 at a private rooftop venue in Astoria!  Make sure your membership dues are up to date and paid and come enjoy an open bar and some nibbly bits out doors on a roof with a great view of the city so nice they named it twice.

Obviously if you’re unsure about your membership status or when it expires just shoot an email to and Aaron will let you know!  Of course we can take “walk in” membership applications and renewals at the event, but we’re trying to avoid any delays getting people into the party – so register/renew now!

See you all very soon!

President, Out Astoria – 2013

New Location for February Mixer!

Hi everyone!

It’s been a crazy month for us Astorians but I just wanted to take a moment to let you all know that we’re still on for our February Mixer!

Things are changing in Astoria, and in recognition of that, Out Astoria is holding this month’s mixer somewhere we haven’t been before!  Some of you might remember Veronica’s as the place we’d go across the street from the old Lavish Lounge – sometimes it was to chat with the bartendress or just have a quiet sip of whiskey with someone you wanted to chat with b/c the music at Lavish was too loud for you to hear each other…regardless – some of you remember Veronica’s Bar…and this month (for the first time ever) we get to make their venue “official” with their first Out Astoria Mixer!

Because it’s a new spot for a lot of you, there’s no cover for anyone (members or non-members)…everyone is welcome!  Bring your friends, gaybors, subway crushes and take advantage of the great all-night drink specials:

$4 for a PBR and a well shot

$4 for mixed well drinks

And although this mixer is free, don’t forget to renew your annual Out Astoria Membership if it’s close to expiring!  Just click here and fill out the simple form to renew.  Membership questions, especially if you need to know when your membership is up for renewal, can be directed to our Membership Director, Jason.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all there!  I’ll most likely be the one writing out name tags near the entrance!

Out Astoria, inc.

We’ll also have membership applications, so if you have a friend who’s been thinking about moving to Astoria, or someone who is considering becoming one of our new Affiliate Members, we’ll have someone on hand to answer all your questions.

See you all Friday night!

2012 Out Astoria Elections

Out Astoria Sponsor Members:As a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, Out Astoria has a 13-person steering committee that oversees its operations and events. Members of this committee are composed of, and elected by, the sponsor members of Out Astoria. Steering committee members serve for three-year terms that are staggered so that, in a typical year, roughly one third of the steering committee is up for election.

As of November 28, 2011, we are opening up nominations for those who wish to be candidates for the steering committee in our January 2012 election. Sponsor members can either nominate themselves or another sponsor member by sending an email to Before being listed on the ballot, nominee’s names will be checked against the active sponsor membership list and, unless currently serving on the steering committee, will get a phone call from a member of our elections committee to review steering committee responsibilities and election rules.

The election will be held electronically January 10–12 via a secure Internet voting process. Sponsor members will receive e-mail invitations with a link to the electronic ballot when the election opens. Candidates will have the ability to post a candidate’s statement and photo on a candidate’s page on Out Astoria’s Web site and on the electronic ballot. The ballot is final and closed to new candidacies on January 4.

In this election cycle, there are seven open seats on the board. Four of these are the three-year terms, expiring in 2014, that would normally have been open. Because a few members of the current steering committee are moving out of Astoria, we also have open a seat that expires in 2013 and two seats that expire in 2012. The number of votes winners receive will determine which seats they fill, with those receiving the highest votes getting the longest terms.

If your annual sponsor membership is about to expire, you can renew your membership by Web at or by email to

Again, only active sponsor members can vote or run in the election, or serve on the steering committee. For any sponsor members who have moved out of Astoria but wish to continue attending events at a member discount, check out our new affiliate membership option here:

Once the new steering committee has been elected and announced on January 13, it will meet the following week to select Out Astoria’s new officers for 2012 from within the committee.

This year Out Astoria’s steering committee benefited greatly from the fresh energy and ideas brought by the committee’s newest members. I hope that many of you will choose to participate, either as candidates or as sponsor members who vote, so that Out Astoria can profit from your efforts and continue to thrive and grow.

Out Astoria October Happenings!

It’s another full month for Out Astoria in October – so lets get right down to it, shall we?

It’s been a while since our last visit to Astoria’s one and only MexiQ!

MexiQ takes the immense popularity of barbecue joints in New York combined with New Yorkers’ intense love of Mexican cuisine, and features barbecue favorites with a Mexican accent.  That’s only the kitchen part; the draught part is as equally intense:  48 taps line the back bar, each one holding an artisanal style beer that has been chosen specifically and constantly rotated to match the food, the ever diverse seasons, and of course their neighbors taste buds.

Come join Out Astoria for our October Dinner – if beer isn’t your thing, you can always try one of their perfectly made margaritas (or anything else from their fully stocked bar).

We’re mixing it up again at MiX Astoria this October for a little pre-Halloween fun with your friends and gaybors!  As usual, the 8-9 open well bar is only $5 for members and $10 for non-members.

Join us for some autumnal antics with Out Astorian, Scott Emrich working the music for us this evening!  With an open bar with your local gays and a full evening of shenanigans, you’ll have plenty to talk about over brunch the next day!

If you’re not a member yet, why not join now?

Come join us for the October Non-Fiction Edition of the Out Astoria Book Club where we’ll discuss Mark Kurlansky‘s chatty, free-wheeling history of New York City told from the humble perspective of the once copious, eagerly consumed, now decimated eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginicas).

The Big Oyster:  History on the Half Shell digresses all over the place and sparkles!

It’s available in paperback, kindle, and there’s even an audio edition if you want to go that route.

If you’re on Good Reads too, feel free to join up with our group on there - you’ll always know which book we’re discussing next!

The location for the meeting is not listed here b/c only dues-paying Out Astoria Members are allowed to participate in this activity.  If you’re not already a member, why not become one now?

You’ll also be able to get to vote/run in the Out Astoria Elections for the Steering Committee positions that will be open at the end of this calendar year!  If you have any questions about that feel free to email the OA Elections Committee here.

Come out in full Halloween regalia for a fun night of freakish fundraising!  A $20 cover gets each attendee a raffle ticket and access to a two hour open bar with all proceeds going to The Trevor Project!

The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide intervention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.

Come hang out, dance the night away, enjoy a few cocktails, some candy…Stick around for chances to win Katy Perry tickets, an iPad, iPod and much much more all in support of an amazing cause!

and lest we forget…SAVE THE DATE:

FRI – DEC 16 – OUT ASTORIA’S ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY – 8PM – more details to follow so keep an eye out for it!

See you at dinner!
