Out Astoria October Happenings!

The temperature is starting to drop at night, the heat is kicking on our buildings in the morning, and pretty soon we’ll all be wearing coats to go anywhere outside our apartments and unpacking all the sweaters and hoodies we locked up for the warm weather months. Welcome to full-on autumn!

WED – OCT 20 – OA OCTOBER DINNER AT ZUZIES – 7PM-9PM – $25 prix-fixe

40-17 30 Avenue, Astoria, NY (inside Mix Cafe & Lounge) – 718-406-9600

We’re going to try something a little different for dinner this month and we think you’ll be happy with the change!

The fabulous people who run Zuzies inside Mix Cafe & Lounge have agreed to put together a little prix fixe dinner offer for Out Astoria attendees: For $25 (not including tax/tip) you can get an appetizer, entrée, dessert and one drink!

We know that even though the recession is officially over, we’re all still feeling the pinch–and we thought that some of our members might be more inclined to come out for a group dinner if you knew there was a set deal to work into your weekly meal budget. :)

Of course if you’re keeping things light for yourself, you’re also free to order a la cart from Zuzies scrumptious full menu!

See you at dinner! And please, try to RSVP ahead of time and let us know if you’re coming – we want to make sure we have enough tables reserved!

WED – OCT 20 – SITE’S HOLIDAY PREVIEW PARTY – 5PM-9PM – FREE

Stop by before or after our dinner and join proprietress Mackenzi Farquer for a night of Holiday Preview Shopping at SITE! Take hope a little something for yourself, snap up some early holiday gifts, or buy that special something you’ve been saving up for – all at 20% off this evening only!

Wine, refreshments (like the amazing cupcakes from Creme Bakery here in Astoria) and music will be served for your shopping pleasure!

FRI – OCT 29 – OA HALLOWEEN PARTY AT SISSY MCGINTY’S – 8PM-11PM – $5

Out Astoria is throwing a Halloween bash for the gayborhood!

Come to Sissy McGinty’s on Friday, October 29th! Your $5 cover at the door gets you an hour of FREE well rum and vodka cocktails as well as three draft beers: Bud Lite, Goose Island IPA, and Jaw Jacker Pumpkin Ale. There will be drink specials after 9pm and the fun will continue until late in the night!

AND, because inequality is scary, Out Astoria will donate all proceeds from this event to Marriage Equality New York. Founded in 1998, MENY is the oldest organization in the state of New York to advocate full and equal marriage for same-sex couples. For more information, check out their website.

The cover is only $5 but we are happy to accept additional donations to MENY–checks should be made out to Marriage Equality New York.

Costumes are not required, but feel free to dress up, because afterwards there’s always:

FRI – OCT 29 – MIX CAFE + LOUNGE’S MONSTER BALL – 11PM-4:30AM – FREE!

The first anniversary of the wildly popular gathering they put together last year – this year, the powers at Mix Cafe & Lounge have combined the event with costumes and Halloween – as if any of you really needed a reason to dress up other than the name of the event itself!

There will be a costume competition, drink specials, a Lady Gaga ticket giveaway along with some horror flicks and a live performance by the Haus of Mimosa of course! All of this starts at 11pm and goes into the wee hours of morning!

But we’re not all about drinking and dining this month:

THURS/FRI/SAT – OCT 28/29/30 – OPENING WEEKEND FOR APAC’S MILK MILK LEMONADE – 8PM/2PM – $12

The Astoria Performing Arts Center people have chosen the incredibly well received play by Joshua Conkel, MilkMilkLemonade, to close out their 2010 season with a hilarious bang! Adam Feldman of Time Out New York has already made his plans to come out to our lovely neighborhood to check out this play he was so sorry he missed the first time around! Just check out Helen Shaw’s original review for the show last year – if that doesn’t pique your interest try this review – or just keep in mind that this show is not for kids – anyone under 16 will not be admitted!

Of course we’ve arranged an Out Astoria discount for you all – instead of $18 you can get $12 tickets! However this discount is good ONLY for the first week of performances:

Just head over to the ticket window, choose which performance you want to see, then enter the discount code of OUTASTORIA to get the discounted price. And when you check out, please consider donating $5 or so depending on what you can manage – the arts have been taking a beating in the past year and we all love to support our local purveyors of fantastic theatre, right?

Obviously if you can’t get to the show those first four performances – tickets are only $18 for the rest of the run – and they have shows Thursday through Saturday until November 13 (assuming they won’t need to extend the run if the tickets sell out as fast as we’re all expecting – so make sure you take advantage of the discount as soon as possible!

If you’re keen to try a new place to eat/drink before or after the show – why not try Sweet Afton, Vesta, or Bare Burger?

COMING UP IN NOVEMBER:

THURS – NOV 18 – THE AUTUMN BALL BENEFITING THE TREVOR PROJECT AT STUDIO SQUARE – 8PM-12AM – $50

The Trevor Project is the leading national organization focused on crisis intervention and suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ youth. 2.
I’m going to be stepping down from the steering committee for Out Astoria for a while…don’t think of it as a permanent departure, it’s more like a leave of absence…a sabbatical, if you will. :) I’ll still be around to stop by the odd mixer or dinner and of course if you have a question you’re more than welcome to contact me directly, though if it’s a question about up coming OA events you will probably get a faster reply if you contact these two Out Astoria committee members:
Chap Day at chap@outastoria.com or on facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/chapjday
Michael Mallon at michael@outastoria.com or on facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=16201545

So make sure you’re at the mixer this Friday or the last drinking socially Monday on the 29th – I’ll be limiting myself to only 10 goodbye drinks :)
now onto the weekend that is pride!

Whether it’s Aaron Elvis, Kevin Graves, or Corey Tut, you can be sure the music will be great (if not, downright inspired)!

Bring all your friends and gaybors, there’s plenty of room – well at least until 9pm…for some reason things get very crowded then! :)

Brunch tomorrow, a rally, and charity stuff….

A Note From Jonathan and RuPaul’s Drag Race

If you’re up for it tonight you’ll want to head on out to Lavish – if you made i to last week’s mixer you got a taste for how crazy things get there after 11pm these days…:) and although they’ve had to put the underwear party on hiatus for a bit (if you were there you know why) expect to see maybe a special installment of it in the coming months…something that can be better prepared for…for everyone!

Though this would be on opportune moment to suggest that everyone take a moment to place a few well-timed votes for Mimi Imfurst and her race to get onto season two of Rupaul’s Drag Race…so if you haven’t already voted today (and really you DO know you can vote DAILY, right? why not take a moment now and get one of our local gals on the little screen next season!? :)

http://rupaulcasting.com/people/MimiImfurst

now with that done, if you’re not planning to be out late with the local boys and girls at lavish lounge tonight might i direct you to our brunch tomorrow afternoon!

SAT – MAY 30 – OUT ASTORIA MAY BRUNCH AT LOCALE – 2PM

33-02 34 Avenue, Astoria, NY – 718-729-9080
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=82661636863

We haven’t been back to Locale in ages – and originally this month we were slated to be at Cup Diner but then they decided to start renovations on their place so we decided to come back to an old brunch staple of ours!

http://www.localeastoria.com/

Locale Cafe & Bar is located in the heart of historic Astoria, NY. It’s style reflects the neighborhoods modern yet multi-cultural sheik aspect, which has become a signature of present day Astoria. Locale’s diverse menu can accommodate almost any taste, whether it’s an early afternoon brunch or an intimate dinner by candlelight.

We can usually get a group of 20 in here at two different table groups! but try not to turn up too late, there’s a limit of bloody marys to which even i must adhere! :)

after the brunch the OA steering committee will be meeting up to have a little pre-pride powwow – so if there’s anything you’d like to ask or suggest feel free to send it to me tomorrow before 4pm and i’ll be glad to bring it up at the meeting!

but aside from that if you’re itching to do a little marriage equality stuff and really who isn’t these days…let me draw your attention to a fabulous rally…

SUN – MAY 31 – RALLY FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY AT ATHENS PARK IN ASTORIA – 6PM TO 8PM – FREE

30th Avenue at 30th Street, Astoria, NY – 877-772-0089
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=83785986862

This fabulous rally in support of Marriage Equality is being put together by your local girls and boys involved with the local Marriage Equality Capter, Western Queens for Marriage Equality, and Astorians for Marriage Equality! But I’m going to give you the text of the evite just exactly as they have written it because who could say it better than they can?! Remember you don’t have to be on the facebook evite to attend, but if you want to invite more people to the rally feel free to just forward them this email…of course they want as many people there to support Marriage Equality as possible…and you know I’ll be there along with some of my Out Astoria bretheren! :)

Description:

Thanks for making the Prop 8 rally such a success- now we will be continuing NYS efforts for marriage equality with a rally this Sunday in Queens.

Come show your support for equality, meet up with fellow activists from Queens, hear music from Broadway stars (names TBA), and hear from government officials and members of our community who support marriage equality.

State Senator George Onorato, who represents much of Western Queens, currently opposes marriage equality but our work got us a meeting with him this past Thursday…so lets keep it up!

Senator Huntley, Senator Padavan, and Senator Addabbo of Queens currently oppose marriage equality. Senator Monsorrate is a supporter but not yet listed as a co-sponsor. Also, the Senate Majority Leader, Malcolm Smith, is a Queens senator. So, Let’s show these Queen’s Senators that there is public support for marriage equality!

This rally is sponsored by Western Queens for Marriage Equality. Western Queens for Marriage Equality is a coalition of groups including: Democracy for New York City, Long Island City Alliance, New York State Young Democrats, Queens County Young Democrats, the Jewish Alliance for Change, IntegrityNYC, Marriage Equality New York, Broadway Impact, Civil Rights Front, Empire State Pride Agenda, Civil Marriage Trail Project, OUT Astoria, Astorians United Against Hate Crimes and Astorians United for Peace and Justice.

Western Queens for Marriage Equality is a coalition group that believes marriage is a human right that should be available to all New Yorkers, regardless of sexual orientation. In the words of Mildred Loving, the woman whose courage made interracial marriage legal throughout America, marriage is about “the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight seek in life. [We] support the freedom to marry for all.”

now if this sunday isn’t enough for you you’ll probably want to come and check out Lavish Lounge’s new Monday night series for charity!
