Your Source for Queens Pride!

The month of Pride is upon us and as before we start out with our pre-pride festivities leading up to the big day on June 5 in Queens – we’ll start out with a lesser celebrated area of gay pride and that’s the role of the volunteer!  Currently Out Astoria is looking for a few members to help with weekly food deliveries to the emergency shelter for LGBT youth in Astoria (especially if you have a car, or access to one).  If you’d like to get involved, please contact Out Astoria President, Brent Gallenberger via facebook or e-mail.

Secretary, Out Astoria

At the closing of the year…

We here at Out Astoria hope you all had a safe and fun holiday season (and that you managed to avoid being snowbound at any of the major airports that shut down during the last blizzard of 2010).  We also wanted to thank everyone who came out to the Out Astoria Holiday Party and made it one of the most memorable ones yet!  We can’t wait to see what the new Steering Committee can come up with for 2011!

There’s only a few days left to 2010, and though we’ve all had our highs and lows during it, most of us seem to be glad the end is in sight!

Before we list a few of the local happenings for the NYE weekend and later on in the month of January 2011, we just wanted to remind those of you who registered as sponsor members, if you haven’t already paid your dues via paypal or in person at the last two mixers you can still pay on-line here.  Remember, if your dues are unpaid by January 10th, the Steering Committee Election information will not be sent to you.  You can always check your paypal history to see if you’ve sent in your payment.

Keep an eye out for a message early in 2011 regarding the election timeline for January!

Now, on we go to this weekend and beyond:

FRI – DECEMBER 31 – BURLESQUE @ MIX CAFE + LOUNGE – 6PM TO LATE – FREE!

Zuzies will be offering a pre-fixe dinner for $30 per person including appetizer, entree, dessert, cocktail and a glass of champagne!  Dinner is served until 10:00 PM, so make sure you get a spot before the crowds show up for the big countdown at midnight!

With drink specials all night long and the mandatory champagne toast at midnight this is sure to be your “no cover” local party this weekend!

FRI – DECEMBER 31 – MUNDO CAFE & RESTAURANT – 5PM TO MIDNIGHT – PRE-FIXE!

31-18 Broadway Store #E, Astoria, NY – 718-777-2829

One of our favorite small room eateries in Astoria is offering several seatings for a special New Years Eve Menu this Friday evening!  With seating options as early as 5:00 PM or as late as 9:30 PM you’re more than likely going to be able to find a few fabulous feeding options at Mundo!

Along with an appetizer platter that’s vegetarian friendly, you’ll have a choice of a few entrées that are sure to impress–and don’t forget, couples get a complimentary bottle of champagne at midnight!

Coming up in January 2011, so hold the dates in your calendar:

A Few Local November Happenings!

Some of you have already seen the letter from our co-founders we sent out yesterday – but if you haven’t already, take a moment to read about how far we’ve come in just a few short years (not to mention our snazzy new website set up for us by Marc Stutzel).  It’s also the first part of or sponsor membership drive for the end of 2010 going into 2011 with the election of a new steering committee to head up our lovely little 501(c)3 in the next few years!  If you’ve been looking for a way to get more involved with Out Astoria, this is the official opportunity!

St. Joan at The Secret Theatre in Long Island City – OA Discount for remaining performances!

4402 23 Street, Long Island City, NY  11101 – 718-392-0722

This is, of course, the George Bernard Shaw play about the most notable warrior saint in the Christian calendar!  Given his spectacular reputation as a freethinker and assassin of sacred cows, many feared that Shaw would satirize Joan or portray her as a fraud.  Instead, without romanticizing her as a victim or tragic heroine, he paints her as a human being of unparalleled vision, courage, confidence, and imagination.  Rarely produced, due to the large number of male principal roles and complexity of the female lead, this Queens Players production will feature a full cast of 24!

The powers that be at the Secret Theatre have again given Out Astoria a bit of a discount for the remaining performances – November 5-13 – just head to the on-line box office and pick the performance you want and just enter the promotional code of “outastoria” and you can get $15 tickets!

MilkMilkLemonade at The Astoria Performing Arts Center – only 7 performances left!

30-44 Crescent Street, Astoria, NY (inside the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church Auditorium) – 718-706-5750

Sorry to say that the opening week discount they offered Out Astoria has expired, but if you haven’t managed to get in to see this show yet, you’re missing out on one of the best shows APAC has brought to our neighborhood!  There are still tickets left to the final 7 performances!  Just take a look at what Time Out New York thought!

Emory is an effeminate 11-year-old boy who lives on a farm with his chain smoking Nanna and his only friend, a depressed chicken about to be processed.  Nanna wishes Emory would get his head out of the clouds, stop choreographing ribbon stick dance numbers, and be more like Elliot, the bow down the road with a penchant for burning things.  But Emory and Elliot have a relationship – just not one Nanna would expect or approve of.  With absurd, poignant dialog, and brutal characterizations, MilkMilkLemonade is a bitterly funny exploration of gender, sexuality, life, death, and the human body.

8 – The Mormon Proposition Screening at The Long Island City Library – Sat. Nov. 6 – 3-6pm – FREE

37-44 21 Street, Long Island City, NY – 718-752-3700

QLGPC (Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee) arranged this free public screening of The Mormon Porposition:  Equality for Some at the Long Island City Public Library this Saturday afternoon!

The film exposes the Mormon Church’s historic involvement in the promotion and passage of California’s Proposition 8 and the religion’s secretive, decades-long campaign against gay rights.  The film takes place in California and Utah as Mormons, following their prophet’s call to action, wage spiritual warfare with money and misinformation against gay citizens, doing everything they can to deny them of marriage and the rights that come with it.

If you can’t make the screening this Saturday, QLGPC is hosting another screening in Jackson Heights 0n Saturday, November 20 from 3-6pm.

Weds., November 10 - Porno Bingo Fundraiser for Bronx Community Pride Center – FREE (but you’ll have to buy your bingo cards!)

8 Christopher Street, New York, NY – 212-929-9291

Since our former Out Astoria President, Dirk McCall left to helm the Bronx Community Pride Center, we’ve still managed to keep in touch and though we know this event isn’t Astoria-specific, we know how much fun Porno Bingo can be at Pieces and every cent raised at this event will be going back to the Bronx with Dirk to help run the Pride House!  So come out and join the legendary Will Clark as he features the Bronx Community Pride Center at this Porno Bingo night at Pieces – they’ll be joined by the lovely and amazing Appolonia Cruz and Tyra Allure Ross, as well as Mr. Metrocub himself, Heriberto Oquendo!

You’ll have to buy your bingo cards each round but each round you’ll have the opportunity to win porno-rific prizes brought to you by Will Clark’s industry connections!

Here’s a few other upcoming Out Astoria events you can put in your calendar now – expect an evite and more specific information via email soon!

Sunday, November 14 – Out Astoria Game Night at Walz-Astoria – 4-7pm

Tuesday, November 16 – Out Astoria Dinner – 7-9pm

Friday, November 19 – Out Astoria Mixer at Mix Cafe + Lounge – 8-11pm – $5 from 8-9pm – FREE with OA Membership (and yes you can register and pay your dues at the door too)!
