This week is particularly busy:

TUES, JULY 12 – OUT ASTORIA STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING

We wanted to let you all know the that the steering committee would be meeting this week and if you have any suggestions as to what you’d like us to discuss or review just send an email to me, the Vice President, and I’ll make sure it gets on our agenda for the meeting!

WEDS, JULY 13 – MOVIE NIGHT AT SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK – 7PM – FREE!
SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK

Socrates Sculpture Park’s Outdoor Cinema is a tradition of summer in the neighborhood…and this year is no different!

Come out and sample regional cuisine from neighborhood restaurants, or bring your own food & drink and picnic on the grass as the sun sets over the city! Enjoy performances by local musicians and dancers and, as the sky darkens, see exceptional international films on a large-format screen–all set against the spectacular backdrop of the Manhattan skyline.

Join your Out Astoria friends and gay-bors on the grass of the park for this week’s screening of the 1960s Czechoslovakian comedy “Who Wants To Kill Jessie?” – Pre-screening performances begin at 7PM – Film begins at sunset – and of course it’s FREE to all!

We will, of course, let you all know where in the park the Out Astoria Group will be setting up their blankets for the screening (prior to the evening event). We’ll also keep a close eye on the the weather forecasts and give everyone plenty of notice should the rain force us to cancel/change the event.

WHO WANTS TO KILL JESSIE
CZECH REPUBLIC
1966, 91 mins. Directed by Václav Vorlícek. A scientist (Dana Medricka) invents a machine that allows her to view a sleeping person’s dreams in this wacky 1960s comedy from Czechoslovakia. But when she tries it out on her husband (Jiri Sovak), she discovers he’s dreaming about the hot heroine of the comic strip “Who Wants to Kill Jessie?” Worse yet, Jessie (Olga Schoberova) soon comes crashing into their lives for real – throwing them into a cartoon world of good guys and bad guys. (Not Rated)

We’ll send an email out to all event RSVPs that will let you know where abouts in the park you can expect to find the group, so make sure you check your inbox before you head over to the park!

Out Astoria October Happenings!

40-17 30 Avenue, Astoria, NY (inside Mix Cafe & Lounge) – 718-406-9600

We’re going to try something a little different for dinner this month and we think you’ll be happy with the change!

The fabulous people who run Zuzies inside Mix Cafe & Lounge have agreed to put together a little prix fixe dinner offer for Out Astoria attendees: For $25 (not including tax/tip) you can get an appetizer, entrée, dessert and one drink!

We know that even though the recession is officially over, we’re all still feeling the pinch–and we thought that some of our members might be more inclined to come out for a group dinner if you knew there was a set deal to work into your weekly meal budget. 🙂

Of course if you’re keeping things light for yourself, you’re also free to order a la cart from Zuzies scrumptious full menu!

See you at dinner! And please, try to RSVP ahead of time and let us know if you’re coming – we want to make sure we have enough tables reserved!

The cover is only $5 but we are happy to accept additional donations to MENY–checks should be made out to Marriage Equality New York.

FRI – OCT 29 – MIX CAFE + LOUNGE’S MONSTER BALL – 11PM-4:30AM – FREE!

There will be a costume competition, drink specials, a Lady Gaga ticket giveaway along with some horror flicks and a live performance by the Haus of Mimosa of course! All of this starts at 11pm and goes into the wee hours of morning!

But we’re not all about drinking and dining this month:

THURS/FRI/SAT – OCT 28/29/30 – OPENING WEEKEND FOR APAC’S MILK MILK LEMONADE – 8PM/2PM – $12

The Astoria Performing Arts Center people have chosen the incredibly well received play by Joshua Conkel, MilkMilkLemonade, to close out their 2010 season with a hilarious bang! Adam Feldman of Time Out New York has already made his plans to come out to our lovely neighborhood to check out this play he was so sorry he missed the first time around! Just check out Helen Shaw’s original review for the show last year – if that doesn’t pique your interest try this review – or just keep in mind that this show is not for kids – anyone under 16 will not be admitted!

Of course we’ve arranged an Out Astoria discount for you all – instead of $18 you can get $12 tickets! However this discount is good ONLY for the first week of performances:

Just head over to the ticket window, choose which performance you want to see, then enter the discount code of OUTASTORIA to get the discounted price. And when you check out, please consider donating $5 or so depending on what you can manage – the arts have been taking a beating in the past year and we all love to support our local purveyors of fantastic theatre, right?

Obviously if you can’t get to the show those first four performances – tickets are only $18 for the rest of the run – and they have shows Thursday through Saturday until November 13 (assuming they won’t need to extend the run if the tickets sell out as fast as we’re all expecting – so make sure you take advantage of the discount as soon as possible!

If you’re keen to try a new place to eat/drink before or after the show – why not try Sweet Afton, Vesta, or Bare Burger?
